GOOGLE MOBILE CARRIER?
9:00 AM
Let’s talk about Project Fi, no I’m not making up things now, this is Google trying to make a name for itself in the mobile carrier game. (Note: Google is not going to actually be competing with big name carriers, because it would be very expensive for them to build a network of cell towers) I was quite surprised myself upon hearing this, it turns out that they’re moving into the prepaid territory. Because Google isn’t starting up their own cell network, they've turned to T-Mobile, and Sprint, and will be working off of a mixture of the two carriers networks. Using Project Fi it will be possible for the user to send texts and make calls over Wi-Fi. Going out of Wi-Fi areas doesn't mean dropped calls, the users call will simply be switched over to the cell network. Because it’s a mixture of T-Mobile and Sprint's network, your phone would constantly be switching between either of the two's network or available Wi-Fi. As Google says “We developed new technology that gives you better coverage by intelligently connecting you to the fastest available network at your location whether it’s Wi-Fi or one of our two partner LTE networks.”
Sounds pretty good right? Not so fast, there are some issues at hand. The biggest thing consumers such as yourself worry about is price point right?. $20 for unlimited text, and talk, well what about data? Data is going for $10 a GB, and they give you some options for how you would like to pay for it. Let’s say you want to pay for about 3GB in advance, not sure of how much data you’ll actually use, well after the month is over any unused GB are rebated back to you, and if you even go over that threshold you’ll pay the difference on your next bill.
Project Fi is in an invitation-only carrier, and the biggest kicker is it’s only on available with select devices, mainly Google Nexus line of phones. Maybe they can convince phone companies to make a Project Fi only version of their phones. Only time can tell, right? At the time of this post , Project Fi users will now be able to get a data-only sim card that can be used with select Android tablets and iPads with cellular service. So now Project Fi supported devices includes the Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 4 and Galaxy Tab S. If you would like to get more information and reviews from folks that have tried Project Fi already, there are a ton of videos on youtube.
